Find frequently asked questions and answers about AIT.
What is AIT?
AIT is a professional association that supports interpreters, translators and language professionals through membership, training, advocacy and professional development.
What does AIT stand for?
AIT stands for the Association of Interpreters and Translators.
What languages and sectors do AIT members work in?
AIT members work across a wide range of languages and specialist sectors, including legal, medical, public service, commercial and community settings.
Does AIT work with external organisations and stakeholders?
Yes. AIT collaborates with professional bodies, public sector organisations, educational institutions and other stakeholders.

You can contact AIT through the contact details provided on the contact page.
How can I stay informed about AIT news, events and opportunities?
How can I advertise my services through AIT?
AIT does not generally offer direct advertising of individual services. However, we do provide several ways for members to gain visibility within the community.
Eligible members may be promoted through AIT channels subject to current policies and available opportunities. This may include being featured as a speaker on our CPD programme, inclusion in our member directory, or participation in occasional member spotlight campaigns such as posts, short interviews, and introductions.
Opportunities are shared throughout the year, and members are encouraged to take part where relevant.
Is the interpreting industry in the UK regulated?
Some areas of interpreting and translation are subject to specific standards and requirements, but there is currently no single statutory regulator for the profession across all sectors.
Public service interpreters and translators are regulated through voluntary regulatory bodies such as NRPSI and NRPST. British Sign Language interpreters are regulated by NRCPD or RBSLI. However, with outsourcing prevalent within public service organisations, private intermediaries may apply their own codes of conduct and complaints procedures.
How can I become involved in AIT board, working groups or volunteering activities?
Members are encouraged to participate in working groups and volunteer initiatives. Opportunities are advertised throughout the year. If you wish to get involved with the work of the Board, please contact us at chairman@ait-professionals.com.
How do I become a regulated interpreter?
Requirements vary by sector. Generally, interpreters should obtain recognised qualifications, gain experience and meet the registration requirements of the sector in which they wish to work. For more information contact NRPSI and/or NRPST for spoken languages, and NRCPD or RBSLI for British Sign Language.
What qualifications do I need to work as an interpreter in the UK?
Qualification requirements vary by sector, but recognised interpreting qualifications and language proficiency are strongly recommended.
Where can I find a regulated interpreter?
Does AIT provide a directory of interpreters and translators?
Yes, please refer to the AIT website for information about any available member directory services.
What is the difference between a qualified and a regulated interpreter?
A qualified interpreter holds recognised interpreting qualifications that demonstrate their knowledge and skills.
A regulated interpreter, however, not only holds relevant qualifications but also meets the standards and registration requirements of an independent professional regulatory body or sector-specific framework. Regulated interpreters are required to abide by a professional code of conduct, undertake continuing professional development, and are accountable through an independent disciplinary process. These safeguards help ensure professional standards, ethical practice, and public protection.
Does AIT provide guidance for organisations working with interpreters?
Yes. AIT supports good practice and can provide information and guidance on working effectively with interpreters and translators.
What professional standards are expected from interpreters and translators?
Members are expected to uphold high standards of professionalism, confidentiality, impartiality, competence and ethical conduct.
Can AIT help with career development in interpreting and translation?
Yes. AIT supports career development through training, CPD opportunities, networking, professional supervision initiatives and professional guidance.
Does AIT provide guidance on professional standards and ethics?
Yes. AIT promotes high professional standards and provides guidance on ethics, conduct and best practice. More information can be found within our resources.
