Membership FAQs

How do I join AIT?

You can apply for membership by completing the online membership application form and submitting the required supporting documents. Applications are reviewed by the Membership Secretary before approval.

Who can become a member of AIT?

AIT membership is open to interpreters, translators and other language professionals who meet the eligibility criteria for the relevant membership category.

What membership category shall I apply for?

The most appropriate category will depend on your qualifications, experience and professional status. Please refer to the membership categories page or contact AIT for guidance at membershipsecretary@ait-professionals.com.

What are the benefits of being a member of AIT?

Members benefit from professional recognition, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, networking events, access to joint training events, member communications and opportunities to contribute to the profession.

How much does membership cost?

What documents do I need to provide when applying for membership?

The documents required will depend on the membership category you are applying for. Typically, applicants may be asked to provide evidence of registration with relevant regulatory bodies (such as NRPSI, NRPST, NRCPD or RBSLI), qualifications, professional experience, security vetting, proof of enrolment (for Student Membership), proof of identity, and any other supporting documentation required to support their application.

How long does the membership application process take?

Applications are usually processed within a few days, depending on the volume of applications and whether all required documents have been submitted. As AIT is run by a volunteer Board, processing times may occasionally be longer during particularly busy periods. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Can students or trainee interpreters join AIT?

Yes. AIT offers membership options for students and those who are currently training to become interpreters or translators.

Is AIT membership open to translators as well as interpreters?

Yes. AIT welcomes both interpreters and translators who meet the membership requirements.

Can I change or upgrade my membership category later?

Yes. Members may apply to upgrade their membership category when they gain required professional qualifications and/or professional experience.

How do I renew my membership?

Membership can be renewed annually by paying the applicable membership fee before the renewal date. AIT will send a renewal reminder approximately one month before your membership is due to expire. Members also have the option of setting up a Direct Debit payment to ensure their membership renews automatically each year.

What happens if my membership expires?

If your membership expires, you may lose access to certain membership benefits until your membership is renewed. If your membership has lapsed and you would like to discuss your options, please contact our Membership Secretary at membershipsecretary@ait-professionals.com, who will be happy to assist you.

How can I update my membership details?

Members can update their contact details and other information by contacting the AIT Membership Secretary at membershipsecretary@ait-professionals.com. Alternatively, you will receive a form during the renewal process.

Are membership fees refundable?

Membership fees are generally non-refundable unless exceptional circumstances apply.

What payment methods does AIT accept?

AIT accepts payment via bank transfer.

Can I pay for membership or training in instalments?

Instalment options may be available for certain programmes. Please contact AIT for further information at chairman@ait-professionals.com.

Will I receive an invoice or receipt for my payment?

If you register for events through Eventbrite, you will receive a receipt after booking directly from Eventbrite. If you wish to receive an invoice, please request one by emailing treasurer@ait-professionals.com.
